The Boachabela String Orchestra
China Global Television Network production, directed by François Verster, 27:24
At the Musicona non-school musical training center in Bloemfontein South Africa which was established during Apartheid times, a radical project has been taking placein the recent years. Bochabela String Orchestra was founded by an American bassist Peter Guy. The project has been a passion for Peter for 15 years.”The classical music scene in Bloemfontein was really vibrant. There were concerts constantly, the halls were full. But it was quite artificial because it was just for part of the population. Just prior to the change of government a young black girl was brought to me by the Arts Council, I started teaching her and she did extremely well. I started thinking “Well, if she can do well there must be other kids who can also do well,” recalls Guy. “I didn’t grow up with classical music. I was not exposed to it,” tells Siyolise Nyondo, a bassist. “I’m originally from Bloemfontein. The violin is the instrument that I love. It’s my first instrument. I’ve never even played anything before that,” tells Bonolo Kgaile, a violinist. Each Saturday children from the black neighborhoods of Bloemfontein are brought by bus to the Musicon. Peter Guy himself picks them. In this way he’s able to know where they stay and connect with them. Bloemfontein’s old guard has at times been slow to fully embrace talented young black musicians and some of the children in Bochabela String experience resistance from their own communities. “People in my community see me as a snob because I play violin and it’s awestern musical instrument, “says Bonolo. During the weekdays younger children known as junior orchestras from across Bloemfontein come to the Musicon after school to learn to play classical instruments. They are taught by their senior orchestras like Siyolise whotransfer their skills to younger musicians. “As our younger kids who started 15 years ago have grown up they’ve become the absolute perfect teachers,” says Guy.

During his career, he would drive his van from his home over 100 miles away to Aspen where he would park at the base of the mountain and spend the winter living and working out of his home on wheels. Once Spring would break and the ski season would melt away, Tom would be home sowing and tending his food crops, maintaining his solar powered house and meditating by his spring fed stream. Tom realized that he needed a better source of off-season income. The next day, when following trails, he discovered imprisoned people and gave them freedom by killing ghosts and moving a large rock. Many years later, there is still a group of nomads staying in Pamir, surrounded by high mountains and animals. They know there is a different world somewhere far, but they want to stay with their land. Rare visitors too this land could find living so far from civilisation unbearable. Bucket of Conscience
Tiffany Washington
This film follows a young woman of color who is living in the near future with a mental illness. In this future, healthcare chips must be worn by citizens and government healthcare financial assistancce is on a strict point system. The main character, Dorothy, has ran out of healthcare points and must reach a black market pharmacy before she completely relapses. Dorothy needs and desires to have family around her in order to get through her difficult mental break down, despite whether or not her family is a figment of her imagination or not. I am the director, writer, editor, and VFX artist for this film. My team and Condor Entertainment worked incredibly hard to get this project completed. This film is inspired by my mother who has schizophrenia and lives with it like a true warrior. Exact moments and lines in the film were taken directly from my mother’s personal experiences with schizophrenic episodes, which she shared with me during an interview I did with her for this film. I completely dedicate this film to my mother who is my best friend, my family, my inspiration, my everything. Mental health is still a taboo topic to discuss and explore, especially in the minority communities. I hope to make someone discussing their mental health as comfortable as someone discussing their common cold. One the key components for the success of someone living with mental illness, in particular, is the assistance from family members. Family is so important for our mind healing and stability. Being depressed, having anxiety, hearing voices, seeing things not there, are all things we get through better when a family or friend tells us this truth: “You’re not alone.
